PPS Number
We usually begin our Irish adventure with finding an apartment and obtaining a PPS (Personal Public Service) number which is essential when contacting social service institutions, tax offices etc.
The PPS number can be obtained in the local Social Welfare Offices by showing two identity cards with a photograph (a passport, an ID etc) as well as a letter confirming our whereabouts such as:
- a letter from the landlord of our apartment
- a letter from the main tenant (and the main bill-payer) who letting us the house.
- the rent book with our name and surname
- a bill with our name and surname on it (which is difficult to get right after arriving in Ireland)
If our landlord or the main tenant refuses to give us such a letter or we are living in a hostel or a B&B, we can get it from the hostel or B&B where we are staying.
The PPS number is sent to us in a letter after 2 weeks. The letter can be obtained earlier at the Social Welfare Offices from the person in charge of issuing PPS numbers.

Specially for Carlow.pl, Michael Browne, a representative for SIPTU for Carlow county gave us a brief interview about problems experienced by Poles and other non-nationals in Ireland.
