Social Activist - First Steps:

PPS Number

We usually begin our Irish adventure with finding an apartment and obtaining a PPS (Personal Public Service) number which is essential when contacting social service institutions, tax offices etc.
The PPS number can be obtained in the local Social Welfare Offices by showing two identity cards with a photograph (a passport, an ID etc) as well as a letter confirming our whereabouts.

CARLOW JOBS CLUB

-Excuse me do you have any vacancies?
-No, but drop in your CV and we will call you and let you know if something comes up
Almost every immigrant seeking employment in Ireland must have heard such a response. But where can you get so many CVs from? To have 10 CVs printed in internet cafe you have to pay 2 Euro, which seems very little. But you have to spend another Euro for using the pc. It makes 3 Euro, which isn’t that little when your budget is very limited, especially at the beginning. The prices are similar in other Internet cafes. Luckily, there is a better solution.

Places worth visiting

The Old Cemetery

Carlow, Ireland, old cemeteryThe old cemetery in Carlow is situated delightfully by the bank of the River Barrow. The side of the hill is covered with high-growing grass and among it stick out old tombstones – a perfect picture from horror films. The cemetery is featured by an old and squalid, centrally-placed statue which looks like a huge wall standing between the cemetery and the side of the river.

Pubs and Nightclubs

Racey Byrnes

Racey Byrnes, Carlow.plThe pub is just next door to the Carlovian pub. There are 3 rooms inside; one for those who like chatting, another one is relatively quiet while the last one has a fireplace. The interior is decorated in an original way.
