Carlow News
According to The Nationalist, Carlow Town Council is determined to solve the litter problem with no compromise and have focused on, so called, ‘Black Spots’ i.e. most littered places in the town. Those include Green Road and the surroundings of the Supervalu supermarket. The issue remained unresolved despite the guard keeping an eye on the places, so it has been decided that cameras will be installed in the ‘Black Spots’. The new kind of supervision of the places is due to start operating in the next few weeks.

The Nationalist reports that one of the major issues of last week’s Carlow Town Council meeting considered the litter surrounding The Liberty Tree as well as anti-social behaviour. Some claim the Fountain is also a spot for drug deals. According to some of the councillors, the trees and bushes around the Liberty Tree are a cover for litter louts, drug-dealers and drunk thugs.
Not everybody shares the same opinion, though. Councillor Des Hurley says the removing of the greenery around the Fountain won’t eliminate the litter problem.
The Liberty Tree was built to commemorate the Rising of the United Irishmen in 1798 who died in an ambush on Potato Market. The rebels were buried in the Croppy Grave, a mass grave in Graiguecullen named after their uniforms.
The Gardai have dubbed the last weekend ‘manic’ as The Nationalist reports. Five cars were set alight in Graiguecullen last Sunday night at about 3.30 and the flames could easily have reached the neighbouring buildings. All possible witnesses are requested to contact the nearest Garda station.
At the very same weekend, approximately 30 people were arrested for violent behaviour as well as possessing and selling drugs.
