Poles to have Carlovian-Polish soccer team?

Carlow.plCarlow.plSunday soccer matches played on the pitch by the Hacketstown Road might soon become more professional. Amongst the amateur soccer players, some are very good and could compete in one of the international soccer leagues in Ireland. Perhaps, we will be able to have a genuine soccer team with professional outfits, matches and fans. Currently, discussions are being held with a possible sponsor who is interested in the investment and help to set up a Polish team. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for our soccer boys

A Polish night at Nancy Whiskey’s

carlow, ireland, community, spolecznoscCarlow, pub Nancy Whiskeys - Polska Impreza A ‘Polish party’ was organised in Nancy Whiskey’s pub (in the Haymarket) last Tuesday, 25th April. The pub was selling inexpensive Polish beer and there was a buffet full of traditional Polish dishes. The only thing which left much to be desired was the music. Except for Maryla Rodowicz (a Polish singer) there were hardly any contemporary songs, especially rock songs. Despite this tiny inconvenience, however, it can be well said that the service lived up to the customers’ expectations. Special sheets had been prepared for the people to write down suggestions for the future parties that are supposed to be held regularly, every Tuesday.

Another match behind us

Carlow, Ireland, Community, Carlow.plCarlow, Ireland, amateur soccer matchAnother soccer match has been played on the pitch by the Hacketstown Road. The teams were smaller this time, probably due to bad weather. There were 12 – 14 players who were later joined by two Portugese men. The game was dynamic and full of interesting pieces of play. The final score was 12:9.

Full starting line-ups and a draw!

carlow, ireland, community, spolecznoscCarlow, Irlandia, mecz piłki nożnejBehind us is another amateurs’ soccer game which took place last Sunday at 5.30 p.m on the pitch in Hacketstown Road. This time it was more than the organizers had expected as two fully-manned teams stood on the grass. The first half was played on the larger pitch. Unfortunately, the match had to be finished on a smaller one, as the large pitch is a car park on a Sunday for users of the local sports club. The players kept up the speed of the game which was fast and spectacular. Both teams were even which resulted in a 3-3 draw. Between the halves, all the players posed for a commemorative photograph.

Another match is due next Sunday at 5.30 p.m.

Blessing the food – the cathedral was full

carlow, ireland, community, spolecznoscCarlow, święcenie pokarmów w katedrzeToday, on Holy Saturday, the Poles living in Ireland, regardless of their political or religious beliefs, went to church to join the Mass and take part in the blessing of food, which was to be consumed on the Easter table. The Carlow cathedral was overcrowded and some of the faithful had to stay outside by the main entrance.

Leaving the church with wicker baskets in their hands, our compatriots attracted attention of Irish passers-by. Some of them stopped to ask what was happening in the cathedral.
